Meet Janell & Matt – Finalists to win the Ultimate San Diego Wedding!

We have been together for over 4 years and in those 4 years, just like every relationship, we have had our fair share of ups and down. We are very happy to say that despite all that we have been through, the one thing that has never wavered is our love for each other. Matt is from Hawaii and is currently attending California State University San Marcos. I am a San Diego native! I also graduated for Cal State San Marcos and currently work for a medical staffing company. We met through mutual friends- who grew up in Hawaii and I became friends with through school. Looking back, it is amazing how life has a way of working out! Our friends who have been supportive still stand by our sides and will stand with us into the next phase of our lives, which we could not be more excited about. We have never been happier, but our lives and relationship have not always been smooth sailing. About 2 ½ years ago, Matt was in a serious motorcycle accident that required 2 surgeries to reconstruct his left leg, forcing him to let go his dream of playing high level (professional or semi professional) soccer. We are extremely fortunate that it was his leg that needed to be repaired and not something worse. While recovering, Matt continued to work on his bachelor’s degree at Cal State San Marcos. After his accident, we had decided that there was no need for us to consider getting married until he was done with school and then this past January he was diagnosed with Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinoma on his face and back. Skin cancer runs in his family and claimed the life of his biological father. While treating the abnormal cells topically, which was very unpleasant, physically and emotionally, Matt had a conversation with his mom. His mom, knowing all too well what it is like to lose someone you love too soon, told Matt that life is too short to wait for things to be perfect. Life may just pass you by. With that in mind, Matt proposed on my Birthday this year (at 7 am). Although I was slightly in shock due to the time of day and that he had completely surprised me, we are ready and really excited to start our lives together under any and all circumstances. We are best friends, partners in crime and a true compliment to each other. We are ready for whatever is coming our way because we get to face it together. Winning the dream wedding means we get to share in an amazing experience with our family and friends and we get an even better story to tell our future kids! It will be the beginning chapter in our hopefully happy, HEALTHY, long lives together. P.S. be sure to wear your sun screen kids.
