Thought I’d get a little philosophical on this one since session has quite a different flavor than the last boudoir session I posted a few weeks back…

Boudoir is playful.

Boudoir is empowering.

Boudoir is celebrating YOU and your fabulous self.

Boudoir is also very much about telling your story. That’s what we love about what we are lucky enough to get to do every day. These type of sessions are just as personalized as our engagement and lifestyle shoots.

Is it something you want to celebrate about yourself?
Or something you want to capture that he or she loves about you?
Or even a fun fantasy theme you’d love to play out? { we can talk more about that in a private phone call consultation }

These sessions are something different for everyone and that’s what’s so fun and amazing about them!

Miss A seriously was super fun to photograph. All those fabulous sassy tattoos and the angel wings? Come on! Too. Much. Fun.

The Scripps Seaside Forum in La Jolla provided a unique and scenic location for Liz and Anton's wedding. With backgrounds as varied as the beach, lush trees and beautiful architecture, finding places to take photos was a breeze. Tasty appetizers overlooking the ocean were followed by a lovely sit down dinner indoors, and the evening was rounded out with lively music and dancing.

We enjoyed working with Annamarie and Chris twice, for their ‘your story’ – Modern Romance and then for their wedding. Their film was a hit at the reception and the rest of their wedding was super fun as well. They are just such a fun and funny couple. Their precious little baby was along for the ride all day too. They had a Chargers/Disney theme which is probably the most unique theme mix we’ve seen yet, hah. enjoy…go team!!

The second I read “inspired by Sex and the City” I squealed a little bit. I was so excited that I skipped to the end where I could look at all the photos. And then I was in heaven. This gorgeous styled shoot was sent to us from The Posh Knot. From the words of Johnique at The Posh Knot:

“The Posh Knot’s obsession for both New York and both Sex in the city movies were infused throughout the entire shoot and brought the East Coast right to Southern California. Right away San Diego’s Downtown nightlife was automatic when selecting a venue for the shoot, a love revealed itself when visiting Fluxx Nightclub a historic building located in the Gaslamp District San Diego for an industry event. There were so many elements to this venue that screamed upscale New York City. From the charismatic lighting, to the posh lounge furniture nestled in each corner, displayed everything we were looking for in a venue. An amazing venue paired with the amazing photographer Laura Christin to capture the vision, The Posh Knot was headed down a road to success. Once the venue was selected everything else came in tow. All of the Sex in the City elements was incorporated from Carrie Bradshaw and Big to Carrie’s love for shoes Mahnolo Blanik and Jimmie Choo in the table names.”

Cristine married Jason on October 1st, 2011 at St. Michael's Church. It was the perfect fall day to get married on. Christine and Jason waited a long time to make this day happen and it was worth the wait. Some of the amazing touches that made the day special were created by Cristine and her family. There was a 5 foot tall escort card board, with pearls and flowers constructed by Christine and her amazing family. Little thank you cards were even placed at each guests place setting. They wanted little personal touches like this to be part of their special day. The colors they chose couldn't have been more perfect for their wedding day. The navy blues and the crushed oranges gave soft but vivid visual effects for their guests to enjoy. I would have to say that the best surprise of the evening was the food truck that Cristine and Jason planned for their guests. After the firework show they enjoyed from Lego Land was over their guests chowed down on some amazing treats from Bacon Mania! This was a fun end to their special day!

Andrew and Tyra chose to have their wedding ceremony at Golden Hill Park and their reception at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in Downtown San Diego. This is not the MCASD which is located in La Jolla. It is located on Kettner Blvd, and although it shares a name with its La Jolla counterpart, the similarities stop there! The venue seems dedicated to displaying artist’s work in the form of a full video immersion experience. At the time of their wedding, MCASD was displaying the works of Jennifer Steinkamp, titled “Madame Curie.” This work is a combination of moving flowers and flowering trees, and it really can make you feel like you’re entwined in a giant field of foilage. Around 40 flowers and plants were used, all of which were mentioned in Madame Curie’s biography. To display this work, the museum uses seven projectors projecting video onto three walls. Obviously that concept is hard to understand, so after I set up my equipment and was waiting for guests to arrive, I made a video of my surroundings to demonstrate. Andrew and Tyra had their ceremony at Golden Hill Park. This is a ceremony area which has strict rules against ‘amplied music’. They chose to use a live band for their music, but still contracted with me to provide a battery pack, speakers, and wireless microphones for their officiant and singer of the band.

Cocktail music was provided while guests arrived from Golden Hill Park. Andrew and Tyra stuck with the classics… mostly Rat Pack songs. I had my equipment set up in a corner of the room, designating a clear dance floor area for guests. Also something to note– My speakers are angled downward. Does this seem strange? It’s actually a great feature of the JBL PRX series speakers I use. Consider this room… It’s a giant rectangle, with very few items in the room, much like all museums. Sound projected directly onto a wall bounces off the wall, creating a crazy amount of echo in a large empty room. To mitigate this, I use the alternate pole sockets on my PRXes, aiming the music downward, which makes it bounce off the floor at an angle and into the ceiling, eliminating echo. It works well, and is something any trained audio technician should know to do. My years of experience installing, configuring, and fixing audio equipment at retail venues make me a valuable asset to clients. Once guests arrived, I invited them all to find tables or belly bars and began the Grand Entrance. Photos from this point on were provided by the talented Breanna Carin Photography.

Here’s something funny I have to mention. For some reason, the computers providing video to the projectors were all set to go off at different times, but weirdly enough, all these times were before their reception had ended. The computers were running windows, and a window would pop up on the screen saying ‘this computer is shutting down in 60 seconds’. Guests all joined in when each computer got to 10 seconds, chanting, “10… 9… 8… 7…” and then yelling and cheering as the computer shut down. Then a few minutes later another computer would start it’s shutdown cycle and the chanting would repeat. It was hilarious to watch, and the guests really got a kick out of it. I had to take a photo for my memoirs.

Grand Exit

For their Grand Exit, I instructed all guests to form a tunnel leading out out of the museum entrance, and we did a big send-off as they began their new life together. Congratulations to Andrew and Tyra and their families, and thanks for choosing The Creative Music DJ for your special day!

A Tip from Hybrid Photography: Including Your Dog in Your Engagement Pictures

Even if your dog won’t be able to be a part of your wedding day, they are still a member of your family. What better way to show that then by including your dog in your engagement session? You can plan to have your engagement session in a dog friendly park or beach area, and your photographer can work with you to brainstorm fun ideas for including them in some of the pictures. Its important to remember that your dog will not be in ALL of the shots, so plan on having a “dog wrangler” recruited for the day of your session. This is very helpful when capturing just the two of you so there are no distractions. Try bringing along a favorite tennis ball or other toy for your dog to play with during your session. This is also great for getting their attention. If you dogs are smaller, try bringing a picnic blanket to sit on so you can snuggle with your furry friend. Take a short walk with your dog during the beginning of your engagement session. This will help tire your pup out and give him or her the opportunity to get used to the camera and the sounds it makes. Before letting your dog off leash, be sure they are trained well enough to come when called, and will not run off into the distance. Leashes will definitely not ruin a photo, so don’t be afraid to keep it on! Most of all, be sure to have fun with your dog in your pictures-show off the happy family that you are!

Creative Music DJ: Real Wedding Playlist: Jason and Julia at Estancia

When I first met Jason and Julia, there was this connection between us during conversation which was obvious. The reason for it? Jason is a DJ, and also the Entertainment Director of his place of employment. When I tell people this, they always comment, “wow, must be nerve-wracking DJing for a DJ, huh?” Well, I actually consider it quite an honor when someone who is a club DJ trusts me to take care of their wedding properly, which takes event management on the microphone, and ability to get everyone on the dance floor as well as take it ‘club-style’ when the time is right. Club-style doesn’t mean just mixing, by the way. It means understanding phrasing, programming, and the actual music being played in clubs now. Being able to blend that with tradition wedding-esque themes and track selection is my specialty, and something that I am proud of taking the time to develop and evolve. So, we vibed. Julia was wonderful too. According to her, her musical tastes have evolved since meeting Jason, and these tastes would need to be incorporated into the night as well. Ironically, they both mentioned the fact that Julia had a dislike for house music before she met Jason, and now it’s her favorite genre! Oh yes, and as for DJing for a DJ… this was much more than that. Bear in mind that good DJs have lots of good DJ friends! Let’s just say that the guest list was full of guests with a discerning ear for good mixing, transitions, and music selection! Cocktail hour was held on the patio outside the reception ballroom, and was supplied by guitarists. Since I didn’t participate in this, my part in their evening started after cocktail hour.

Wedding Reception

Once cocktail hour was over, we opened the ballroom doors and invited guests into the Grande Ballroom. I set up my equipment on the far side of the dance floor, clean and professional as always. I was working alongside a lighting technician, so we made sure to accommodate each other space-wise, and then I spent some time collaborating with him so that we were in sync with the events and his part in them.

Once guests were seated, we began the Grand Entrance.

Immediately after the Grand Entrance, we went into dinner. Once dinner was finished, we began toasts. Jason and Julia then gave a short thank you speech to their guests.

For the first set of open dancing, I played a lot of classic favorites and some redrums where I felt they would work best. After a bit of dancing we took a break for some more formal activities.

For the second set of dancing, we ramped up to the infamous ‘club-style’. I was enjoying this set a lot so I took the initiative to hit record on Serato ScratchLive and recorded my ending set. And this photo just goes to show that you didn’t have to be on the dance floor to enjoy the mix!

Post-Reception

The party wasn’t over when the reception was finished, so I instructed the remaining guests to head over to Mustang and Burros (the bar on premises) for the after-party. I did manage to catch Jason and Julia for a post-reception photo, but I’ve lost the photo and so I can’t post it here. I’m so bummed! I assure you they were pleased with my services! Congratulations to Jason and Julia and their families, and thanks for choosing The Creative Music DJ for your special day!

From Engagement to Wedding: Anne and Paul

We included a handful of Paul and Anne's engagement photos in our Favorites of 2011, but we thought they deserved a post of their own. Paul is a fighter pilot and we had the very cool opportunity to go on base and shoot with the planes. In spite of the cold and windy weather, Paul and Anne were great sports and their photos turned out wonderfully! The beach in front of the Hotel Del Coronado proved to be an ideal location for Paul and Anne's wedding ceremony and poses. A fun, laughter and dance filled reception followed at the Coronado Community Center, and was the perfect send off to the new couple as they head back east for a new chapter of their lives.

I gave Lauren & Stephan one rule before I started photographing their engagement session. Don’t let each other go – Stay connected. Clearly I did not need to give any direction, these two have such romantic chemistry that the engagement session pretty much photographed itself. And despite the endless crowds at Balboa Park during the week of Christmas, they happily ignored all the curious tourist and onlooker’s and did what any truly in love couple does .. they disappeared into each other. Get Crafty: DIY Cake Stand

Today on we are featuring a DIY project that is a MUST for your Wedding day, a cake/dessert stand! Cake stands can become costly, but today we are going to show you how to DIY {do it yourself} and help that budget!
These are not only cost efficient but easy to do! If you are planning on having a dessert table at your wedding get creative, use different colors, textures of paint, shapes, and sizes of flower pots/trays! Think outside of the box, stack multiple stands and connect them on top of each other, making a cupcake or cookie stand! Not only are these cake stands multi-purpose but they are a great way to show off your style too!

The supplies you need can be found at Home Depot, Lowes, or Michaels (can be more pricey here BUT - if you have a smart phone download the Michaels app and get 40% off one item coupons that are scanable right from your phone!)

: Here are all of the {ingredients} Flower pot, Flower pot tray, Sand paper, Hot glue, Newspaper, & Spray Paint … Acrylic paint can always be painted on using a brush! Take the Flower Pot and get ready to paint! I thought scuffing it up with sand paper would help it look a little more rustic {optional}

Paint the Flower Pot which ever color you like, we choose “satin”. Also paint the tray, front and back! Some of the price tag didn’t peel off but its okay because that is where you attach the flower pot! Place the tray & flower pot upside down, gluing the bottom of the pot, and make sure you center it!

We added some pearls to give it some character. Add beads, fabric, or paint the trim to match your style!

TA-DA! Now you have your very own DIY cake stand!

For larger weddings such as Will and Yu Xie’s, dancing is typically held in the Living Room. I set up my equipment on the far side of the dance floor, clean and professional as always.

Grand Entrance

Dinner was held in the Sunset Room, which is where we also did the Grand Entrance and toasts. Immediately after the Grand Entrance, we went into dinner, then toasts.

Will and Yu Xie then gave a short speech and thanked their family and guests.

When toasts were completed, I invited all guests to move into the Living Room and began their first dance.

For their Grand Exit, I instructed all guests to move downstairs to the entrance, and we did a big send-off as they got into an antique car and left their event.

Post-Reception

Before they left the party, I made sure to get my signature post-reception photo with the newlyweds. Congratulations to Will and Yu Xie and their families, and thanks for choosing The Creative Music DJ for your special day!
