It was sort of a blah day outside. And Geoff and Ali were really hoping for a San Diego sunset. They’re moving back to the East Coast and, naturally , want to take as much of the West Coast back with them…even in their pictures. So, the grey day wasn’t ideal. But, Del Mar is pretty colorful, and well, so are Geoff & Ali’s personalities. (Side note: We had SO MUCH fun shooting with these two. It felt like we’ve known them forever!) We hope their Colorful San Diego Engagement Session photos always make them smile and think of their time out West. Desiree and Brian came into town from Scottsdale, Arizona and luckily we were able to squeeze their engagement session in for them. Man o man did we have lots of fun, these two were super natural in front of the camera. We started off the morning at L’auberge Del Mar and then made our way to some train tracks that I have been dying to shoot at for a while while ending on a hike at Torrey Pines State Beach where we’d end at the beach getting a little wet and sandy. I always recommend saving the beach for the end of the shoot that way we can get as dirty as we need to and then its fine – plus that’s part of the fun anyway right?? This was a pretty hard shoot for me to pick a favorite….can you? Let me know at the bottom of the post if you have any in particular you like or any other thoughts These two will be back in August for their wedding and I know their wedding photos will be off the charts as well, can’t wait guys….see ya sooooon! Cole I love shooting at L’auberge – so many cool nooks and cranny’s and of course gorgeous landscaping… Probably my favorite candids of the day – after Brian yelled “TRAIN!” so we all got off the tracks and moved our stuff we were standing there with it going by blowing our hair (well Desiree’s…) and I said screw it lets snap some photos this is pretty sweet! This is me, laying on my stomach in the middle of the tracks….hey ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get the right angle! Love the cliff backdrop on both of these….they sunny haze works for these shots in my opinion. Love this B&W!! They even decided to be brave and get in the water…it was cold so just a little bit Playing in the water a bit and laying around getting sandy is almost a necessity for awesome beach photos, I am glad these two had no problems with that, as such we got some sweeeet shots like this one below.

Technically, this beautiful sea of yellow is not made up of wildflowers, but of mustard. (But they look like pretty wildflowers, right?) We are 100% certain because: a) Ryan said so; and b) he made us try some. In any case, it made for the perfect backdrop for Ryan & Kari’s rustic, wildflowers engagement session! Men, here are a few suggestions for you and your looks on your wedding day:

Get a professional shave… come on, you know you’ve always wanted to try it.
Spurge for a manicure (lay off the colored polish though)
Looking pasty? Get a spray tan!
Relax with a massage, facial, and teeth whitening in the weeks before.

I love love, and photographing couples that adore each other is obviously the kind of love-fest that my little photographer heart adores. Kalyn & Adrian wanted me to document the milestone of their 2nd wedding Anniversary. So I put on my fanciest sandals and headed to the beach on a beautiful afternoon to capture these two doing what they do best – being in love. Not only do these two look like a Calvin Klein commercial for a sexy perfume add, they are in real life actually tall enough to be model’s – I almost wished I had a photo to show you how short I was in comparison… sigh.. to have legs that long, I can not even imagine. Kalyn & Adrian – I have no doubt that when your 5 year anniversary comes around, you wont believe how fast the time went – because as the saying goes ” Time fly’s when you are with the one you love” ! Elaine is a teacher and a trained dancer... her dancer's balance was put to a test during our shoot! Here's a little sneak peek from their engagement session in Coronado. See that shot up there? The waves were rocking so heavily that we all had trouble maintaining our balance on this dock at Coronado Fairy Landing. Like I said, Elaine is also a dancer, so she did phenomenal when I had her show off a few moves, despite the rocking dock! Go Elaine {okay, and Will too!}!

La Vida Creations {Real Engagement} Allyson and Paul at Santa Fe Train Depot/Downtown SD

Allyson and Paul…two lovable souls who have found each other through the magic of the internets! He was in Bakersfield, she was in Los Angeles. Their first date was a bit hard for them to manage due to the distance, but once they finally had their first date at a little Italian restaurant in Los Feliz, Allyson and Paul knew that the “distance thing” was totally worth it. Allyson and Paul love to travel together, so the gorgeous Santa Fe Train Depot made for a perfect setting! They thoroughly enjoyed playing around with their map of Europe while chatting about the big day, future travel plans, and generally horsing around with each other. Paul proposed to Allyson at the top of the Empire State Building, which was totally fitting…”An Affair to Remember” is one of Allyson’s favorite movies of all times. Paul took it a step further, however, as he whipped out his iPad and showed her a video that he and his friends had made prior to the trip. The video started with Paul lip-synching ‘Rhythm of Love’ by the Plain White T’s (a fave of theirs) and proceeded with footage of Paul recounting many of the special moments and locations that they had shared together. The video ended with imagery of Paul going into the jewelry store to pick up an engagement ring, and it was at that time that Paul had dropped to one knee as Allyson viewed the love story unfold. iPads are awesome…just sayin’. Another truly great story that these two shared with us is the first time that their two mothers were to meet. They were very excited to go to a U2 concert (Paul’s all-time favorite band), with a planned introduction of the two moms earlier that day. The meeting went well, although Paul started to develop a striking abdominal pain. They all said to “man up” and just go to the concert… and sadly, they ended up spending the night not dancing to Bono and The Edge, but rather in the ER. Paul witnessed Allyson’s love, support and devotion that evening first-hand, and really couldn’t be happier (minus the side-splitting pain, of course). Several weeks later, Allyson surprised Paul for his birthday by giving him two tickets to see U2 in Minneapolis, one of the last cities they played on the tour. Now, isn’t that thoughtful and sweet?! Wrestling with the map made for some really fun images! Awwww! The entire time we were at the Depot, we couldn’t help but notice how the light just illuminated Allyson’s GORGEOUS hair! Quite angelic, yes? You can just tell how safe and beloved Allyson feels when she’s wrapped in Paul’s arms… After some fun at the Depot, we cruised around the corner to shoot in front of one of their favorite spots in SD, the US Grant Hotel. We were very thankful for their patience as we asked them to walk this stretch a few times so that we could capture their relationship without tooooo many tourists hanging about. Allyson and Paul, we had a great time catching up with you and sharing some laughs! You guys did a GREAT job, and we are so proud to be your wedding photographers! Remember that we can squeeze inside your suitcases for your next big trip. Hee hee!

Aunt Sherry says, “The bride’s family always pays for everyone, so tell your father to start saving, it’s going to get expensive.” Aunt Sherry is always the voice of reason, not! She is actually half right in this situation but that belief is antiquated. Nowadays, couples decide together who pays for each piece of the event (and the myriad events before and after). The days of brides families paying entirely are long gone and most couples have now been paying for the majority of their wedding costs on their own – including the ceremony, reception and honeymoon. According to a 2010 survey in The Wedding Report brides and grooms on average, each pay about 29% of the wedding costs for a total of 58%. From there, parents, friends and relatives make up the rest. If you ask us, our biggest recommendation is to only put it on credit cards if you want the points and can pay it off comfortably within the next six months. Otherwise, have a wedding within your immediate budget – no one wants to start their wedded bliss in debt. How will you be paying for your wedding? We are so excited to have this experience with Peggy. The lovely Miss Deena (our studio manager) is also going to be traveling with us to Paris. We can’t wait to take over Paris with our Diva Team!
